abstract = "Observing the sunglint, i.e., the specular reflection between Sun,
sea surface, and sensor, which intensity depends on the geometry
of acquisition, allows the observation of surface oceanic features
in a similar way as when using synthetic aperture radar images.
The basis of this approach is that both images are affected by
changes in sea surface roughness that can be caused by different
oceanographic processes, such as internal waves, fronts, wind
friction and the presence of biological or mineral surfactant
films. Considering that near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths are
normally absorbed already ate sea surface skin depths or are
reflected when on specular conditions, it is assumed here that
they might discriminate more expressively the sea surface
roughness than the visible (VIS) wavelengths. In this context, an
image fusion technique was adapted to be applied to a MODIS image
under sunglint condition. The NIR band with a 250 m spatial
resolution simulated a panchromatic band for the sharpening of
other concomitant VIS 500 m resolution MODIS bands. The fusion
method here used preserved the radiometric characteristics and the
sea surface roughness features on the resulted image allowing an
                         improvement of the image interpretation.",
